Advanced Internet Marketers' Tools Of The Trade
By Heather Egan
In this piece, we'll explore four steps that are required for the creation of a successful web-based business. While these tips will help out any web site, the Optimization and Convert sections are focused specifically for eCommerce applications. Links to all pieces referenced here are at the bottom of the article. Let's get started. Research / Create Google Sets / Related Searches (skill level: Novice) One of the great hidden gems of the SEO copywriting world is Google Sets. Imagine a tool where Google will actually tell you what it expects to see as 'relevant' for a particular keyword? We all know that relevant content ranks. That's what search engines are for. But what if Google actually showed you what it was expecting to see? That's where Google Sets works in concert with Related Searches. To view the new Google Related Searches, first do a search, then click on "More Search Tools" on the left column, then click on 'Related Searches." Now, grab those keywords presented at the top of the page and find a way to work them into your content. You'll show the search engine that your fully relevant for a category including related topics. Golden and highly effective. Google AutoComplete / Google Suggest (skill level: Novice) A great piece of content should have some nice little 'exact phrase matched' gems in there for search terms that are variations of the core keyword phrase. For example, optimization for the keyword 'camcorder' would have related phrases of "cheap camcorder", "best camcorder", "camcorder reviews," etc. You're going to want to work in those keyword phrases into your content. Search engines LOVE exact-phrase matching. Never over-do it. Always sprinkle these little goodies in at first until you find a nice density for this approach. A sure-fire way to get put last in results is to 'keyword stuff', or blast a bunch of terms separated by commas at the bottom of your pages. Give yourself a little credit. Be smart about it. Monitor Google Analytics (skill level: Novice) Not only will you get valuable insight to how people are finding your site, you'll see what content performs the best. Step 1 on your campaign is to start generating data. Google's Webmaster Tools (GWT) (skill level: Novice) Discover your site's performance and which pages might be missing or have errors with Google's Webmaster Tools. When your site has good reputation, and links that have been present for 90-180 days, you'll get SITELINKS and those are also managed through GWT. Optimize Integration of rich multimedia (skill level: Novice/Intermediate) If you really want to prove you're an authority on a topic, include youTube videos of the topic on your page. For the Novice track, use the EMBED code on a given video, for the INTERMEDIATE track, use the YouTube API to insert the video content on your page. The EMBED code has a drawback, users can easily click away from your page by clicking on the video which isn't optimal. If you go the YouTube API route, clicking on the video only PAUSES the video. This improves site/page retainment and this leads to more conversions. Google Website Optimizer (skill level: Advanced) When you're ready to see which images/creative works best for a campaign/web page, you're going to want to try out a few types of images and messaging for your web page. Does the user prefer to see 'ADD TO CART' or 'BUY NOW' or 'PURCHASE NOW?" Using split testing and different graphics and messaging is possible with Google Website Optimizer. Convert Install ClickHeat (skill level: Intermediate) You're going to need to know what sections of your site and its pages are getting the most attention. For that we use a tool called 'ClickHeat.' ClickHeat provides valuable insight as to where, exactly, people are focusing their attention to. You'll see how certain sections of your website and its pages get all of the attention and the coveted 'above-the-fold' section is indeed the money-section. It's a free tool however some basic knowledge of PHP, HTML, and MySQL is required to install the application and the code snippet on your pages. You'll soon see how the upper-left quadrant is the money-quadrant in most cases. Keep Learning I'm going to save the best for last. Will Google Labs closing affect any of these recommended tools?
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
Yes, apparently Google has shut down Sets and Labs. (insert big frowny face here.). However, the rest of the article is good.
